Paper Submission & Deadlines
Written work is a major component of this course. Students are expected to submit written work in electronic and hard copy on the dates listed on the weekly schedule below. If a paper is not submitted by the due date, 5% of the grade for a draft will be deducted per day until the paper is submitted. No more than 50% of the grade will be deducted in this way. I will gladly grant extensions on paper deadlines given that they are requested at least 24 hours in advance of the original due date. The student and the instructor will work together to find a reasonable alternative deadline for submission. Extension requests made after the official due date of an assignment will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Students will want to hold on to all copies of written work that the instructor returns to them. Electronic copies will not be accepted in lieu of hard copies; each assignment must be submitted in printed as well as electronic form. Examples of properly formatted papers will be provided to students in preparation for their first written assignment.
Short Writing Assignments and Peer Review Work
In addition to the longer papers, which receive a letter grade, you will be expected to complete periodic short writing assignments, both in and out of class. These are intended to improve the quality of our class discussion and your longer papers by encouraging careful critical thinking about our readings through lower-stakes written reflection on texts.
